Rissa Kerguelen and associated books. These are interesting because Busby is positively trying to get to grips with the problem of the commanding economy fall out of touch with the colonies. The heroes are offspring and clients of a proto Great House, which cultivates "The Long View" in terms of investments and military force assembly. Time dilation and cold sleep keep them alive from one end of the story to the other, over sixty years or so; but it would take more contrived and stranger methods to maintain purpose over a few centuries.
