I posted this over on Project Hieroglyph, hopefully someone will pick this concept up again before too long and realize it.

Until then, how I picture the robotic "carabiner" is like an ouroboros with four or six legs. The "mouth" is the female end of a quick connect fitting, and the tail ends in a male. It's very flexible, like a snake.
