The following is a story I have written my world building project that I have had in my head for a while. (Nine years) The inhabitants of Kamian 4 is a sentient species of insectoids.
Their average body type is a mix of a beetle and an ant. The Kamians can alter their bodies, to create new sub species and to gain new abilities.
There is tons more I have stuck in my head about these bugs. I do not think Kamian is a very good name for them though....I am terrible at names.
At the end there will be some rough sketches of the Kamians.

Maru stood in front of the semi-razed hive. The northern part of the hive would be heavily damaged by the end of the day if the a forced labor group didn’t come into fruition. A feeling of accomplishment and a small tinge of failure bleed through her.
“Whuuut” a whistle range out, and to her side came Sister 5, adorned with armor on her legs and torso…. Yet it was unblemished.
“Maru, quite impressive even if the hive might burn down a bit”. Maru shifted to the right and looked to the Sister. Everyone’s sister and fifth in the line for queen.
“Sister, we didn’t expect our strikes to be this effective, the innards of the hives were more volatile than expected”, stated Maru.
“Yes yes, get your units ready, Queen’s orders will be coming out soon, and additional movements against the retreating scum are need” Sister 5 stated while looking at the burning hive.
“Yes Sister,” Maru stated.
Maru whistled three times, within five seconds, confirmation whistles came to her. “Who will get the banners for our actions?” Maru thought to herself.

A month earlier
Maru lay close to the ground, the evening humidity slowly letting up. Her carapace shuddered slightly allowing her to breath while almost motionless. A small localized scent came from the right of her “All clear, no signatures in the area” it read. Her three squad mates would get the same scent seconds later. Under normal circumstances, the degree of secrecy was unneeded, but these were not normal circumstances. The hive was at stake.
Maru gave a whistle command and Vira moved up to the edge of the cliff in front of them. Vera made her own whistle and a few moments the whole squad and Sniffer(the one who sent the scent command) was at the edge of the cliff. In the view ahead was the rolling jungle hills and then a large coastal hive.
“Those stinky Kaigans will get it, I swear on the Queen”, quipped Vera
“Redirect your frustrations elsewhere Vera, the mission takes precedent” squeaked Maru, Vera snapped back into a normal dutiful form, however a touch of restlessness remained.
The massive hive complex lay with a red wall surrounding the inner hive with minor hives dotting the edges of the wall. “Sketches be finished in a minute ma’am”, chirped Justi, their heavy equipment and record data specialist. A strong man who has gone up the ranks despite the military’s and her own prejudice. Despite not being equipped with special eyes like herself, he absorbed the information like dry Corpa leafs soak up Divian liquor.
“No movement in the forest and valleys under the minor hives, wait…. some kids playing near the edge of a minor hive and the jungle.. Looks like they might be finished in an hour or so”. Dedi reported. Maru could feel a slight playful step in Dedi’s movements. Supposedly she nearly got kicked out of the military multiple times, but her mix of great marksmanship, tactics and strong personality kept her in and due to some good coaching from Maru’s superior, “The Claw”.
Finally the Sniffer, a heavily modified Ishin, very small, weak, and worse of all lacking a carapace. A body onyx black with many protrusions coming from it. Putrid to the eyes, however it was equipped with amazing sense of smell, ability to masks smells, alter smells and to relay messages via them.
It was decided that they would proceed towards the closest minor hive that which was also closest to the inner wall of the main hive. Infiltration of the minor hive town would start at 27:00.

Laying right in front of them was a small recently built hive town. Architecture was a ramshackle of clay, stone, concrete, wood and metals. Many of these recently built buildings were quite hastily made, some you can say are barely finished in the first place. It seemed as if the main hive itself was encroaching towards the jungle like a wave. The Sniffer had cleaned and changed their scents, even in a town like this a heavy jungle scent would stick out and be detected from a distance. With the cleaning done, they went through the streets keeping their profiles low and moved to cover to cover. Occasionally the Sniffer would alert the squad of late night stranglers getting back from drinks, overtime or whatever these Kaigans did to entertain their rotten little lives. To the left of them, led a path with large group of stranglers sitting around a public dipspot.
Vera reported “We have enough ammo and skill to dispatch them, the path to the inner wall is easy to get to from there”
Maru retorted, “No, its too big of a risk, I would not do it if they were sleeping ether” Vera nodded in muted disapproval.
“The way to the right is much less crowded and a much longer path from what me and Dedi scouted out earlier” Justi reported.
Maru nodded, the right path was lacking in people but not in items, a lot of construction equipment and boxes. Care was needed to make sure to not make a ruckus.
They continued down the path for a period of time, then Sniffer chirped “Two incoming, twenty seconds”
“Orders ma’am?” Dedi asked, with no room to run, they had to act fast.

What a day, a hot and cramped day, it seemed nearly endless. Paint paint paint, being part of the work crew 4 was truly fruitless.
“Hey Tanzo, where is big sis going to tell us to go next? More ventilation tunnels?” chirped Tanmi.
“Weda the quickest fasta we dabest, If we didn’t do the painting we do da wurst job, the cleaning” yelled Tanzo.
Tanmi agreed, “Ya lets hope the other crews handle that” at the same time trying to lead her friend down the path.
“Lets go this way way” Tanmi stated , a bit drunk herself.
Warmth, the textures of her bed and her beautiful wall tapestry. All welcomed her after this long day, as soon as she brought her friend back to their place. Nearing a corner a repugnant smell came to her senses and then some noise. “Woa whats that?” She said to herself.
Huddled in one part of the street lay a person puking with some ‘friends’ there for support.
“Sorry for the noise, she had a lot to drink.” said one of their companions, the others were patting their poor friends back.
Possibly spurred by ‘the Juice’ Tanzo asked a question “What did yuuu do today? You look like you wede through the day labor groups.”
The dark individual shook in surprise and then slumped “We have been through a lot of of shipping and construction stuff.”
Tanmi pulled at Tanzo “Lets go home, cut the chat”.
Tanzo slowly moved along, then jerked towards the stranger. “You look strong like a construction worker” Tanzo slurred, Although very drunk herself Tanmi knew shame and bowed her head to show an apology. “You should join the guard, yuda protect us well I dink” Tanzo said while drooling. Tanmi pushed Tanzo forward “Let the shadows die” she uttered. Tanzo squeaked “Why we fighting da other hive city anyhow?”.

Sniffer was covered in water and plenty uncomfortable with dealing with Dedi’s “puke”, but the act did did not last forever.
“Clean up” Maru stated, After their brief encounter with the locals the group made their way through the outer hives, no drunks, no more roadblocks, and then the outer wall lay in front of them.
The area right in front of them was the wall of the inner ring for the main hive. Near the main entrance up north there were multiple layers as previous scouting reports told them, however by the mini hives in the south that the squad were in they only had to conquer the wall itself. Like the mini hives in this section, this area was also subject to a large amount of construction, leaving holes to penetrate.
The squad got through the construction areas until they were on the top of the wall. Daybreak would be within an hour or so. Maru instructed to keep low while she was getting ready. The cover on her head and front torso were removed. A tinged pain slivered through her body. She looked in front of her, first with the eyes she was born with and then with the ones she was installed with, six red and two black. They scanned the main hive. Not only the physical exterior but the innards, different wavelengths of vision could be perceived , people behind walls, pipes, conduits, an extreme bout of information flowed. She slowly shifted her body to get a full scan.
The final area she was scanning was the western entrance wall area. A difficult area to penetrate area in previous raids. Something popped up on a far wall in the distance and shifted. Maru squeaked “Get down” A rapture of destruction enveloped the group as Vera’s chitin and internal matter pasted them and an explosion of noise. “Down the entrance ramps, Dedi take front with Sniffer, Justi move behind her!” Propelling themselves down the ramps and stairs a distant ringing started vibrating through the hive. After a few floors, physical resistance appeared at last. Two lonely guards tried to pin the team down. Dedi escaped unscathed as the guards’ projectiles missed by meters and then she zeroed down one in mid air and the other the moment she touched the ground. They collapsed to the floor.
The group went down near the entrance of the inner wall from where they came from. Down below they noticed a retinue of about ten guard and judiciaries around the entrance. Going straight down to engage them would protract their escape. In the distant, a hum could be heard ….. Demons. Maru sent a command command “Smoke, Frag, spray and run”. Further commands gave the range and the area. Then she signaled at Dedi and Justi. Justi fired his launcher first, and Dedi flung a smoke grenade right after. The group below were sprayed by shrapnel taking out and injuring many, then the smoke blinded the rest and finally the spray of their Piercers cut them down. Maru’s squad rushed down and out to where the hive wall met the minor hive.
The squad made their way through the outer hive running pass sleeping drunkards, people starting early for work. Finally, the noise grew closer. “Two of em coming up from above, they are going to try take us out from afar, they will get the advantage unless we get to the jungle.” Maru thought for a second . Three smokes and two frags. What to do?

The front fang had taken out one of the intruders and the others had failed to sink their teeth in. Rapier-3 and Rapier-5 rushed towards the assumed direction of the intruders, while other Rapiers made sure there was no others intruders in other areas. His wings vibrated making a shrill noise like an overworked generator.
In the distance, smoke flowed from the inner wall,
From the smoke he scanned the relative area around it. In early the dawn it was a tad difficult to see, however his six eyes allowed him more leeway and then he caught it. He flashed commands to Rapier-5 and received his comrade’s answer “Let’s skewer these bitches”

It was still maybe 10 minutes or so to the jungle, something must be done. “Shoot two of the smokes in the front, one long and one short” Justi shot the one long and before he could shoot the …..a shot range out and Justi crashed in front of her and with his front arm ripped off. At this moment the smoke went off in front of him. Leaving him and Maru engulfed in a large smoke cloud. The other devil missed their shot and Dedi continued to rush into the smoke ahead at full speed.
“We can’t leave them behind! I can be a distraction for you!” squeaked the Sniffer.
“You are not even a threat, we need to get to the smoke and then I’ll make a plan.” yelled Dedi.
Among the smoke Maru found Justi and launcher with her red eyes.
“Give me the grenades to reload” barked Maru. Justi quickly handed the remaining grenades to Maru, just as he done this one devil swept down low and a good amount of smoke dissipated. Maru shot her Piercer at it causing the devil to shift and shoot at the same time. It’s projectile barely pierced through the top of her carapace causing her to scream in pain. A second projectile pinned Justi to the ground.

The two Rapiers rose up to reload in safety. Rapier 3 noticed that smoke was reforming and the two prey were nearly completely covered in smoke again . “Hit the large one” 5 signaled. Rapier-3 replied with an acknowledgment signal.

Maru was reeling in pain and trying to gain her composure. “Ma’am I can’t move! I’m stuck to the ground! Take it out!” screamed Justi.
She sat up with a scream and rushed to help pull out the spear.
Then the Demon’s buzz got even louder.
Behind and in front of them was a Demon each.

The smoke was being diffused again and the two were clearly seen. There would be no more running.
“Fire in three” signaled Rapier-3.
The larger of the prey tried to turn around, she wouldn’t make it in time.
Before reaching one a shadow jumped over a building and shot in mid air, Rapier-5 noticed in time to avoid, 3 couldn’t see it. Piercer bolts rang out and 3’s wings were moderately damaged leaving him flying erratically, he might stabilize.
5 made an on the spot judgment call and extended his spear from his Abdomen and rushed towards the new prey in the open.

Dedi felt an explosion of wind towards her as the other Demon rushed at her. She fired while back stepping but missed, however the Demon scratched her armor with the bolt unfired from it’s Abdomen . It was trying to kill her using the bolt as a melee weapon?

Maru smashed the spear that had connected Justi to the floor.
“Take the smoke and move!” she yelled.
“Behind you” he yelled back.

Rapier-3 had nearly crashed but now he was “stable”, he let one of his sub wings break off in order to keep air stability. Struggling he the noticed the two prey were standing still and preoccupied, so he zeroed in for another shot. The large one motioned back with a large mass.
Maru pulled the trigger.

Rapier-5 lunged and did a feint with his spear while dodging the scum’s projectiles. This caught it in surprise and he dug into her torso with his spear. The scum screamed, Rapier-5 felt a wave of ecstasy flow through him. He knew couldn’t fire unless he wanted to die himself with her. The scrum was barely able to shoot back again and he pulled back, causing the prey to be thrown the ground, bleeding.

Maru and Justi ran rushing towards where they could hear the last devil. More projectiles could be heard and buzzing. Then a loud scream. The two rushed into a courtyard to see the Demon dislodge itself from Dedi. It flew above and to the left of them. They readied themselves.

Disengaging from the prey and flying back Rapier-5 noticed the remaining two around the corner and the burning remains of Rapier-3. There was no moment for recollection just action. It swooped in a curve trying to skewer both of them. The dance was over.

The second frag erupted, engulfing the Devil as it came careened down towards them. Both Maru and Justi dodged it while being peppered with giblets. After that close call, the group connected with Dedi and, to their surprise Sniffer popped up too. With a quick bit of first aid and with Sniffer covering up the wound of Dedi, the injured group made it to the Jungle. There was some additional close calls, however the additional devils had their flight range and effectiveness limited in the jungle areas.
The prolonged assault a month later was made into fruition due to the actions of Maru and her team. The multi generational feud led to the collapse of one hive, but Kaigans would endure as long as they thought they were being lorded over by Ishins.

Glossary:
Piercer: A type of projectile weapon used by the sentient insectoid species of Kamian 4.
This projectile weapon has many variants. To pistols which are wield in one hand. Rifles which are wield by both hands and etc. Elite squads have variants that are attached to their arms, allowing them more versatility in the battlefield.
Demons: what the Ishin Hive call the airborne units of the Kaigan hives. They have somewhat familiar body type to a hornet, but a lot more slimmed down. Equipped with spears that shoot from their Abdomens.
Ishin Hive: A Hive that primarily resides on the rugged mounts of the south central Peninsula of Ibian.
Kaigan Hive: A Hive that resides on the plains, deserts and shorelines of the north east parts of the
Peninsula of Ibian

Maru shot her Piercer at it causing the devil to shift and shoot at the same time. It’s projectile barely pierced through the top of her carapace causing her to scream in pain. A second projectile pinned Justi to the ground.

The two Rapiers rose up to reload in safety. Rapier 3 noticed that smoke was reforming and the two prey were nearly completely covered in smoke again . “Hit the large one” 5 signaled. Rapier-3 replied with an acknowledgment signal.

Maru was reeling in pain and trying to gain her composure. “Ma’am I can’t move! I’m stuck to the ground! Take it out!” screamed Justi.
She sat up with a scream and rushed to help pull out the spear.
Then the Demon’s buzz got even louder.
Behind and in front of them was a Demon each.

The smoke was being diffused again and the two were clearly seen. There would be no more running.
“Fire in three” signaled Rapier-3.
The larger of the prey tried to turn around, she wouldn’t make it in time.
Before reaching one a shadow jumped over a building and shot in mid air, Rapier-5 noticed in time to avoid, 3 couldn’t see it. Piercer bolts rang out and 3’s wings were moderately damaged leaving him flying erratically, he might stabilize.
5 made an on the spot judgment call and extended his spear from his Abdomen and rushed towards the new prey in the open.

Dedi felt an explosion of wind towards her as the other Demon rushed at her. She fired while back stepping but missed, however the Demon scratched her armor with the bolt unfired from it’s Abdomen . It was trying to kill her using the bolt as a melee weapon?

Maru smashed the spear that had connected Justi to the floor.
“Take the smoke and move!” she yelled.
“Behind you” he yelled back.

Rapier-3 had nearly crashed but now he was “stable”, he let one of his sub wings break off in order to keep air stability. Struggling he the noticed the two prey were standing still and preoccupied, so he zeroed in for another shot. The large one motioned back with a large mass.
Maru pulled the trigger.

Rapier-5 lunged and did a feint with his spear while dodging the scum’s projectiles. This caught it in surprise and he dug into her torso with his spear. The scum screamed, Rapier-5 felt a wave of ecstasy flow through him. He knew couldn’t fire unless he wanted to die himself with her. The scrum was barely able to shoot back again and he pulled back, causing the prey to be thrown the ground, bleeding.

Maru and Justi ran rushing towards where they could hear the last devil. More projectiles could be heard and buzzing. Then a loud scream. The two rushed into a courtyard to see the Demon dislodge itself from Dedi. It flew above and to the left of them. They readied themselves.

Disengaging from the prey and flying back Rapier-5 noticed the remaining two around the corner and the burning remains of Rapier-3. There was no moment for recollection just action. It swooped in a curve trying to skewer both of them. The dance was over.

The second frag erupted, engulfing the Devil as it came careened down towards them. Both Maru and Justi dodged it while being peppered with giblets. After that close call, the group connected with Dedi and, to their surprise Sniffer popped up too. With a quick bit of first aid and with Sniffer covering up the wound of Dedi, the injured group made it to the Jungle. There was some additional close calls, however the additional devils had their flight range and effectiveness limited in the jungle areas.
The prolonged assault a month later was made into fruition due to the actions of Maru and her team. The multi generational feud led to the collapse of one hive, but Kaigans would endure as long as they thought they were being lorded over by Ishins.

Piercer: A type of projectile weapon used by the sentient insectoid species of Kamian 4.
This projectile weapon has many variants. To pistols which are wield in one hand. Rifles which are wield by both hands and etc. Elite squads have variants that are attached to their arms, allowing them more versatility in the battlefield.
Demons: what the Ishin Hive call the airborne units of the Kaigan hives. They have somewhat familiar body type to a hornet, but a lot more slimmed down. Equipped with spears that shoot from their Abdomens.
Ishin Hive: A Hive that primarily resides on the rugged mounts of the south central Peninsula of Ibian.
Kaigan Hive: A Hive that resides on the plains, deserts and shorelines of the north east parts of the
Peninsula of Ibian
