What about it in particular do you like, and what have you found inspiring for OA so far?

I see a number of similarities between this setting and OA. Not to say we're identical, but definitely similarities.

In terms of inspiration, we've occasionally talked about trying something with crowdfunding, which this site seems to do. And I'm somewhat intrigued by the 'Atomic Rockets Seal of Approval' thing. Not sure what it is yet or what it requires, but might be something for us to look into.

When I first saw the site, I thought that maybe it presented small vignettes or stories somewhere (and maybe it does, but I haven't found them yet), which would be in line with our recent thinking on adding Snapshots/Vignettes to the beginning of Topics and Articles and could potentially offer inspiration or ideas on how to do that.

My 2c worth,

Todd

Winchell Chung at Project Rho awards the 'Atomic Rockets Seal of Approval' to Science Fiction he considers hard science. I know he likes OA (he is always the first to retweet my OA Twitter tweets, on the rare occasions I get round to making them) and he has used images from our site as well (with permission). However I'm not sure would get the Seal of Approval because of our use of reactionless drive ships, which are somewhat too speculative for Project Rho. We might get it for stories set in the First Federation era though.

Here is the one that decided me.
Maybe with some modifications, we could have species like these in the OA setting:

Afternoon, folks. Your friendly Eldraeverse author here - just looking at my web stats and referrers, and my, it's always worth a comment when I'm cited as inspiration to one of the sites/projects that inspired me.  Big Grin Thought I'd drop in and say hi.

(Oh, and regarding the seal of approval - well, he gave it to me despite being, overall, just "firm" SF, what with the existence of various ontotech devices here and there. Your wormholes play much less fast-and-loose with physics than mine do, for a start. I just try and be sure that all the bits not depending on ontotechnological space magic are suitably hard...)

((Also also: while they are all on the site, if you want the nanofics in one collected place, at least up to 2015, you could always buy the e-books.))

Decided you on what, exactly?

After skimming the list, I'm not really seeing how this is significantly different from what we have in OA. Not saying they copy what we have in OA or that they aren't interesting. But I'm not seeing how these sophonts/lifeforms are drastically different from a number of races and clades we have in OA.

What do you see them having that OA sophonts don't? What do you mean by 'species like these' in the OA setting?

Speaking more broadly, if you feel that OAs current sophonts are lacking in some quality or what to write up and post for consideration a race or clade with some particular set of qualities or features (while NOT simply copying from the Eldraeverse setting, which we would very much not permit), then you are free to do so.

Hi There - Welcome to OA Smile

Sorry for the delay in making your post appear. The forum has apparently decided that first posts that need approval will only show up with a faint red line instead of being fully highlighted in red as it used to do. Go figure.

Anyway, it's neat to hear that OA was one of the inspirations for your project. That's actually kind of funSmile

I've only had a chance to skim a small part of it so far, but it looks quite interesting and it's obvious you've put a lot of love into it.

Perhaps we could do some kind of link-share between our sites? Or at least post a link to your site in our Links and Extras section?

Thanks for the kind words, and sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. (Sudden outbreak of work-related distractions, alas.)

I'd certainly be interested in a link-share, or mutual linkage. I've gone ahead and added a link to OA to my "Other Worlds" section in the sidebar. (And it's probably worth noting, link-description-wise, that unlike OA, my 'verse is only "firm SF"; there are some areas of the setting in which I permit myself a carefully regulated dose of handwavium.  Big Grin )
