EG Korean Translation & Korean Forums

I wonder if in the future, there could be a separate version of the EG containing Korean translations, as well as a separate forums in Korean. I say this because of this website: https://gall.dcinside.com/mgallery/board...ch_head=20

On this website, there are dozens of Korean translations of EG articles. There are also many posts where people discuss OA. I feel like hosting these on the OA website would be useful.

In order for this to work, we will need to find volunteers who can speak both English and Korean that are willing to help coordinate things. At first, the Korean EG would be much smaller, but over time more articles would be translated. The forums can be set up similar to the English forums. There would be places to discuss the setting and places to submit translations of articles. Maybe if this develops enough, people could submit articles in Korean which would later be translated to English.

This might help OA become connected to its Korean fanbase. There are many Korean people who are interested in OA, but have trouble reading the EG as it is in English. I will also bring up the recent Korean video about OA, which has reached 100K views, showing that there is both demand and potential and that this is not a useless endeavor.

One issue with this might be the trouble of maintaining a consistent canon. When English articles are updated, it might be a while before the Korean versions are updated. There must be enough volunteers to help overcome this problem. It also might be difficult to ensure quality of articles/translations. Overall, I think that this is possible if we get native Korean speakers who also have understanding of English. And as has been shown, there are many of these people who might want to help.

This isn’t going to happen at scale anytime soon  - at least not officially -
Maybe there’s a future where we build out a more dynamic website that could support multiple languages better - but switching platforms will likely take years.
I know there’s a Spanish version of some articles , out there on the internet

But I do not recommend trying a major project like that, opening a lot of issues, based on a *hope* of volunteer labor.

Anyone who does not speak English  is welcome to submit anything to the site , possibly even in their native language
and we can translate it into English with Google translate and help them with that writing process (up to a point) .. the problem is that we do need to conduct a conversation and review any submissions accurately.. which is complicated..

If they make their own *large scale* Korean version of the Encyclopedia Galactica in pdfs or some other format, … that’s a whole other thing to deal with. But  really I doubt that will happen.

I’d be open to adding attachments of those translated articles as downloadable files to the relevant Encyclopedia Galactica articles but I haven’t thought of or heard a way where it works well in our current system (very open to suggestions) .. I imagine others might disagree

But this issue of opening up OA to host translations of articles would become very complicated too fast, I think.

I think you or others would  be welcome to go talk to them directly about this and join a conversation on their platforms , at least so they can brainstorm in Korean on their forum.
Writing articles collaboratively with them is also possible

(Anyone on the forums from Korea- feel free to join in on the conversation here to add your thoughts)

But ultimately it would be needed for someone , at least one collaborator in writing , to post drafts of anything new on this forum.

The problem is that once we start adding Korean pdfs to the website, we’d have to be open to adding Spanish or German or Chinese..
I’m totally open to ideas on how to *actually solve that problem* systematically , including the doing of the work to make it happen

Maybe getting those pdfs from them (with attribution to the translators) just to keep the translations around and accessible in our file system might still be a good idea

Totally agreed with Worldtree on this. We barely have enough volunteers to keep up with new articles on the site as it is. Short of some kind of automated translation that is both free and demonstrated to be totally capable of both translating into other languages and working with OAs various unique terms, I don't see a way of making this happen any time soon.

It's a nice idea (it would be cool to be able to make the EG available in multiple languages), but coordinating all that manually and with just volunteer labor doesn't seem doable at this time.

To translate large sections of the site would probably need a small team, plus someone who is willing to overrule and delete any faulty translations.

Google Translate can make some sort of translation automatically, but I have no idea how good it is.
