Dsup (short for damage suppressor) is a protein found in tardigrades that helps them survive intense radiation. It does this by binding to DNA and protecting it from being broken by hydroxyl radicals (which are produced from irradiation of water). This protein makes tardigrades radiation-resistant even when they're in an active state. What's more, engineering human cells to express this protein makes them more resistant to radiation.
