Consolidating the EG a Bit

This is turning out to be a bigger merger than I expected. Originally I expected just 3-4 (the one I put forward, with the fourth being the Virchworld). Right now it's 8!

The EG seems littered with articles in need of mergers. Another I came across is the Sophont article, and there's also Beanstalk & Space Elevator, and the Early Space Elevators.

I've long suspected that in the early days of the project the Founding Members took a 'throw everything at the wall and see what sticks' approach to creating the setting.

In the years immediately after the start of the project there was much more focus on just having people write stuff up and getting it added to the EG than on creating a fully cohesive setting or avoiding redundancy in articles. We've tightened things up steadily over the intervening years, but primarily in terms of how we've approached new submissions, not the content already added.

We're now working to consolidate the older content in this thread here.
