This is probably available on the BBC iPlayer site, and/or maybe YouTube. I was watching the programme "Click" last weekend, and got (once again!) convinced that the Japanese are alien colonists in disguise. 
There is a private Japanese company about halfway through developing a gadget that will create artificial meteor showers. My first reaction was WTF!!!???
And it will probably actually work. It's essentially a cubesat loaded with a few hundred ball bearings or marbles; they are of various compositions to create various colours, and the spheres are kicked out of the back (at speeds of maybe 100kph) and, some time later, re-enter to create a meteor display.
