In a way, this phenomenon of not-entirely-comprehensible software ecologies controlling parts of the economy gives a feeling for what might come next.

Reminds me of Accelerando by Charles Stross. In the story a technological singularity progresses but rather than being formed by AIs and uploaded humans it's a battleground of sentient financial instruments. Not a happy future by any means.
