Alice Rings link to article

Long time lurker but this was pretty noteworthy.

Excerpt:

A team of researchers from the United States and Finland have observed enigmatic "Alice Rings" in super cold gas for the first time. A strange kind of circular magnetic monopoles, "Alice Rings" are a kind of quantum phenomenon that has, until now, only existed in theory. Various forces and particles can arise from the quantum machinery, theoretically including monopoles.

Interesting! Will give this a read thru when time permits.

Thanks for sharing this! Smile

Gave this a read thru - I think these are a different type of monopole (unstable for one thing) than the kind that are described in OA, but it's positive that any kind of monopole can exist at all. Now if we can just find something like the ones in OA that catalyze proton decay and stick around for a significant period of time.

Another follow up piece on this, but some layman's discussion on the potential follow-on discoveries.

Anti-monopole conversion similar to q-balls.

80 milliseconds in advanced physics is like 80 millennia.
Maybe we can get interesting stuff out of this.
