Plasma shields in the Real World - Drashner1 - 06-28-2013

Seems these are being worked on for radiation protection in space:

If doable, these might play a role from the Interplanetary Age onward, although gengineering people to be resistant to radiation and artificial immune systems would perhaps replace or strongly augment the tech.

If I understand the concept correctly, a plasma shield works better against solar flares and other radiation coming from the local star. It doesn't work so well against cosmic rays coming from deep space, as they come from, a random direction, and are just as likely to get trapped in the field and deflected onto the spacecraft as away from it. So you still need other forms of protection anyway.

Would this set up only work at deflecting charge particles not say ionizing radiation like x-rays?
