Gas Giant Life

Generic term for xenobiota (lifeforms) which have evolved on a number of gas giant worlds. In many cases these xenobiota emerged from abiogenesis on nearby rocky planets or moons, and migrated to the gas giant by local panspermia. Most lifeforms of this kind are microbial in form (generally known as skyplankton), and often have a complex life cycle which alternates between existence in the deep, dark, hot lower atmosphere and forays into the upper atmosphere where photosynthesis of various kinds is possible.

In the atmosphere of some gas giant worlds, macroscopic organisms of various kinds have evolved, generally feeding on the microbial skyplankton that can be found there. These generally take the form of large aerial balloon-like organisms (sometimes called "gasbags") which slowly 'graze' in the wide skies of these worlds. A few gasbags have further evolved into predators, active fliers which chase other gasbags and eat them.

Because gas giants have atmospheres mostly made of hydrogen and helium, all jovibiota have a very low density, and often include large gas-filled vacuoles within their cells as well as possessing large gasbag structures (often heated by sunshine or by internal metabolic energy).

Although vaguely similar in form, genetic and biochemical analysis reveals that nearly all examples of jovibiota evolved independently, and these floating morphotypes represent an attractor state that has appeared independently a number of times on widely separated planets.

Similar varieties of skyplankton (and dependent ecologies) have also emerged on a range of smaller worlds, including neptunians, pyrohydrothallassic worlds and toulhian worlds, but the details are often very different.
